Explore the Sidney Spit Interactive Visualization!

DOWNLOADING THE VISUALIZATION

The Sidney Spit Interactive Visualization can be downloaded through the links below. There are four versions of the visualization: (1) a high resolution version for Windows, (2) low resolution version for Windows, (3) a high resolution version for Mac, and (4) low resolution version for Mac. If the high resolution versions do not run well on your computer (i.e., slow and lags too much), try downloading and running a low resolution version. In addition, you can adjust the screen resolution and graphics quality through the box that pops up when first opening up the application, and lowering these can help the visualization run better on your computer. We suggest, however, that you explore the visualization at the highest resolution and quality that runs well on your computer, as this will contribute to the visual experience.

The visualization downloads a zipped package (e.g., SSV-HR.zip, SSV-LR.zip). Unzip the package and open up the application within the folder to begin exploring the Sidney Spit Interactive Visualization!

USING THE VISUALIZATION

When you begin the visualization, you will see instructions that explain which keys control the tides. Click one of the keys to start the visualization at a particular water level. You can select a different water level while in visualization; however, this will restart the visualization with the new level present.

  • Press “H” to start the visualization at high tide (3.2m)
  • Press “M” to start the visualization at medium tide (1.9m)
  • Press “L” to start the visualization at low tide (0.2m)
  • Press “Enter” to return to the title screen
  • Press “Esc” to quit and close the application

While in the visualization, you can explore an area of approximately 85 hectares (210 acres), consisting of the land and marine space between the Sidney Spit dock and (about) 130 metres past the end of the spit. This navigable area is surrounded by invisible boundaries that you cannot cross. These boundaries are identified on the map below with green lines.

  • Press “Up Arrow” key to walk forward
  • Press “Back Arrow” key to walk backward
  • Press “Left Arrow” key to rotate left
  • Press “Right Arrow” key to rotate right
  • Press “Space bar” to jump
  • Hold “Shift” while moving forward to “run”
  • Use mouse to look around

You will enter the visualization at the Sidney Spit dock. For convenience sake, “teleportation points” have been placed along the spit. If you press any of the number keys, you will be teleported to a location. The map below shows these teleportation point locations and their corresponding number keys. Pressing “B” will teleport you on board a nearby moored boat.
